![]() ![]() and a free-standing ship’s wheel visible upon entrance-it didn’t take a million monkeys at their keyboards to suss out what was up: The (second) second coming of Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate™, to a DLC-friendly platform near you this summer. When LucasArts announced an off-site, Game Developers Conference reveal at San Francisco’s famed Tonga Room-all thematic tiki-torches, thatched roofs, artificial indoor rain-squalls. And if it happens to be part of a genre still so criminally underrepresented as the pirate-centric game, so much the better. But every now and then, there’s a title that has earned its place in the hearts and minds of gamers-one especially worthy of a complete dry-dock refit. The game will also come to the iPhone and iPad later this summer.Remakes, plat-ports, and ‘special editions’ of previously-released video games are as often cause for eye-rolling as they are for hand-clapping. The game will be available on July 7th on Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, PC and Mac. Purists, don't panic - you can still play the game with the original music, graphics, controls and without the voicework. If you're a Monkey Island fan, this is a nice perk to drool over. My Preeeecciooousss - As you play Monkey Island Special Edition 2 Le Chuck's Revenge, you'll unlock concept art from the original artists as well as re-worked art from the Special Edition. ![]() If you play in SE mode though, you'll see the outlines of Gilbert, Schafer and Grossman appear in the lower right corner, a la Mystery Science Theater 3000. Even better - you can still progress in the game while listening and it's available in both the Classic and SE versions. Peppered throughout the game, a prompt will appear in the upper left corner whenever commentary is available. Are You There God? It's Me, Guybrush - Have you ever wondered what Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer & Dave Grossman (creators of the Monkey Island series) think about the character Wally? Thanks to a new commentary track feature, you can find out. Don't worry, if you don't like the voice acting you can always turn it off. In SE2, voiceover work is available in the classic version, so you can enjoy the old school graphics with the power of speech and better sound effects. Sing It Loud And Proud - If you played the first Monkey Island SE you probably noticed that the new voices did not carry over to the classic mode. Don't worry about losing the famous humor - options that result in funny responses or Easter Eggs will be included in the wheel of options. ![]() In the SE version, when you pull and hold R2 over objects only the best action options (Pick Up, Give, Talk To, Push, Pull, Use, etc.) will show up, making it much easier to navigate the world through a controller. The folks at LucasArts decided to take that phrase and apply it to the SCUMM menus. "Keep it simple, stupid" is something they teach in grade school. This function is separate from the hint system, so you can use it at anytime. The three-tiered hint mechanic is still in place - press once for a general hint, twice for a more detailed answer and a third time for the game to flat out explain what you need to do - but now pressing L1 highlights objects that you can interact with. Freeeedoooommm!!!! I Can See Clearly Now - Fans of Monkey Island know that there are some pretty crazy puzzles to solve (a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle?), so in order to help gamers along they've evolved the hint system. LucasArts fixed that by mapping Guybrush's movements to the analog stick. Free At Last! - Although point-and-click controls work swell on a PC, it isn't optimal for consoles. While the graphics are beautiful and the same voice actors have returned to breathe life into Guybrush and Elaine, there are several new features to help both console gamers and n00bs enjoy the franchise. This time around, there's more than just a new coat of paint & some voice work. ![]()
